Writing across the Curriculum (Primary)

Who is this course for?
For Key Stage 1 teachers, Key Stage 2 teachers, Literacy Subject Leaders, Year Group Leaders and anyone who would like to integrate high quality writing into their whole curriculum.

Why Write Across the Curriculum?
To enable children to make accelerated progress, they need an audience and purpose for their writing. By linking subjects together into termly or half termly ‘themes’, one piece of writing can cover objectives for a range of subject areas. As well as freeing up curriculum time, this allows teachers to develop real life writing opportunities for their students.

The following will be explored during the session:

  • How National Curriculum objectives can be grouped into themes;
  • How a thematic approach makes learning more meaningful for children;
  • Sharing ideas for linking genres of writing to different subject areas;
  • How to develop a thematic approach within your own school setting;
  • How developing a thematic approach frees up curriculum time.

Who is the Trainer?
This course has been designed and is delivered by ex-Deputy Headteacher, Curriculum and English Subject Leader, Hazel Green. Hazel has not only worked on the development of a thematic curriculum within her own schools but, as a Lead Literacy Teacher for Essex, has supported other schools in the delivery and content of their English teaching.

How will my School benefit?
Delegates will have a clear understanding of how writing can be used to meet curriculum objectives across a range of subjects. They will understand how to develop their planning to link subjects from the National Curriculum, making writing more purposeful for pupils. Delegates will discover how writing across the curriculum frees up curriculum time, taking pressure off teachers and allowing them to develop subject areas in more depth.

How will my students benefit?
Learning through an integrated thematic curriculum will enable students at all levels to make links in their learning. They will benefit from a wider range of approaches to writing, enabling them to make accelerated progress, as they see writing as a tool for life.
