SSTSMFL S6: Teaching writing skills and planning for creative work

About
The Teacher Subject Specialist Training (TSST) was introduced by National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) in 2016 to improve the subject knowledge of non-specialist teachers and returning teachers and increase the number of hours taught in secondary MFL. It aims to build capacity to enable schools to manage workforce and deployment challenges.

Funding
Following a successful bid to the DfE, this programme is fully-funded. There is no cost to participants.

Aim
The programme aims to increase participants’ subject knowledge and subject specific pedagogical knowledge and increase confidence levels in teaching French or Spanish.

  • Increasing understanding and confidence in teaching French or Spanish at KS3 / 4
  • Developing an understanding of how MFL teaching differs from teaching other subjects
  • Being able to draw on a wide range of techniques, strategies and pedagogies to improve students’ knowledge and understanding.

The upskilling of teachers will improve the quality of teaching, which will impact directly on the classroom. The programme will increase capacity in schools, where recruitment and retention of subject specialists is problematic.

Programme overview
This is a blended-learning programme focusing on subject knowledge and pedagogy, suitable for non-subject specialists, existing MFL teachers wishing to teach an additional language or natives with little experience of teaching French or Spanish in the UK. It may also be appropriate for returning teachers to refresh their pedagogical knowledge and understanding. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, face to face sessions will be delivered via Zoom until such time as face to face becomes possible.

Who is it for?
  • Non-specialist teachers who could potentially teach French or Spanish in addition to, or as their main subject
  • Non-specialist teachers who are currently teaching French or Spanish (either full-time or in addition to their specialist subject)
  • Non-specialist teachers currently teaching French or Spanish, in addition to their specialist subject (i.e. A teacher of Spanish wishing to teach French, a teacher of History teacher wishing to teach French)
  • Teachers who are looking to return to the profession - Returning Teachers
  • Specialist MFL teachers who are not currently teaching MFL and who need refresher training to enable a move back to a MFL role
  • Specialist MFL teachers who have the capacity to teach a second language in addition to their language specialism - language - teachers must already be able to speak that language to the required level as this is not a language acquisition programme.
  • Teachers without QTS teaching in academies
  • Overseas trained teachers (OTT) who are resident and eligible to work in England
  • Newly qualified teachers (NQTs) if outside of their Subject specialism (i.e. not their first ITT language)
  • Primary teachers are eligible if they will be teaching year 7 or 8 pupils as part of cross-school key stage 2 and 3 collaboration, e.g. in a Multi Academy Trust (MAT)
  • Primary teachers, if they have firm plans to convert from primary to a secondary teaching post
  • Those who are members of, and have been awarded Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) by the Society for Education, are eligible if they have firm plans to teach either French or Spanish in a school or sixth form college
  • Supply teachers are eligible if they do not have a contract with a school and are committed to returning to a permanent post
