Adaptive Teaching: Meeting Complex Needs (for Primary NQT+1s)
Who is the programme for?
For teachers who have completed their NQT year and would like to further develop their awareness of Standard Five of the Early Career Framework – Adaptive Teaching with reference to those pupils with complex needs, including behavioural needs.

Delegates will increase their knowledge and understanding of the details of The Early Career Framework  Standard Five – Adaptive Teaching, and further develop their awareness of meeting the needs of all pupils, including those who need significant adaptations, or individualised curriculums. They will develop their ability to analyse individual pupils’ behaviour and needs effectively so that they are able to ensure all children make good progress. There will be opportunities for discussion exploring a range of special educational needs, and delegates will be able to share and develop strategies to enable them to adapt their teaching to ensure all pupils make progress.

The following will be explored during the session:
  • Adaptive teaching - what does it look like for children with more complex needs?
  • How do I develop independence and target support effectively?
  • How do I assess children who are not able to access common forms of assessment?
  • Developing effective formative assessment techniques and using these to inform practice.
  • Understanding barriers to learning, including analysing behaviours, and overcoming these.
  • Engaging and working with pupils, families and other professionals to effectively support children with more complex needs.

Who is the Trainer?
The course is delivered by Kathryn Miller, Autism Consultant and Specialist Teacher. Kathryn has previously worked as a Class teacher, Deputy Head, SENCO and most recently as an Autism Specialist Teacher for Essex Local Authority. She has a Masters degree in Autism Studies. Kathryn has designed the course with an emphasis on meeting the needs of all pupils in class giving consideration to a range of additional needs.

How will my school benefit?
Delegates will have the opportunity to explore a variety of aspects of adaptive teaching, and develop their understanding of a range of learning needs. Through discussion they will the role of factors such as ethos, expectations and challenge in promoting success for all pupils. They will also discuss a range of classroom scenarios, exploring grouping and targeting support to build independence.  Delegates should leave with improved confidence in adapting their teaching to effectively meet children’s needs, especially children who are struggling.

How will my students benefit?
Students will in turn benefit from the enhanced awareness of individual needs, and strategies and the teacher’s enhanced confidence to develop effective teaching strategies to meet individual needs.
