New to A Level Teaching (Secondary)

Who is this programme for?
For teachers who are new to Key Stage 5 (KS5) teaching or who anticipate they will be delivering level 3 courses for the first time in the near future.  While the focus will be on A level teaching, issues discussed will be of relevance to those delivering other KS5 courses.

Outcomes
Delegates will enhance their awareness of the deamnds of post-16 teaching and learning. They will examine a range of strategies, considering how these can be applied to best effect in the classroom.  With it's emphasis on classroom practice, this course is an opportunity to examine a variety of aspects that can make a positive impact on student progress and achievement.

The following will be explored during the session:

  • Enhancing key student competencies to promote successful independent learning
  • The Teenage Brain: using cognitive psychology to mitigate against the effects of two lockdowns
  • Stretch and Challenge: incorporating these explicitly into teaching
  • What makes an outstanding KS5 lesson? Hear from some practitioners

Who are the Trainers?
The course is delivered by Fiona Smith who was Assistant Head and Head of 6th Form at the Billericay School, where it has formed a successful part of the school CPD programme. As an experienced KS5 classroom practitioner, Fiona has designed the course with an emphasis on effective and successful teaching and learning, drawing on a range of resources. Her 6th form role in turn has added curriculum breadth as well as informing both a teacher and student perspective.

How will my School benefit?
Delegates will have the opportunity to explore a variety of aspects of KS5 teaching and learning, positioning these also in the educational context of two lockdowns.  Delegates will hear top tips from experienced practitioners, analyse what is distinctive about KS5 teaching and learning, and examine the role of factors such as ethos, expectations and challenge in promoting student success. Delegates will discuss strategies to develop effective classroom practice and should leave equipped with improved confidence in organising and delivering KS5 teaching and learning.

How will my students benefit?
Students will in turn benefit from the focus in the course on specific aspects such as the development of independent learning skills and the emphasis on stretch and challenge, whilst also benefitting from the overall enhanced practice of participants.
