Engaging Boys in Literacy (Primary)
Who is this programme for?
Do you have a gender gap in reading and writing? Are you struggling to engage the boys in your school in reading and writing? If so, then this session will support your goals through identifying a range of ideas, aimed at improving boys’ engagement in reading and writing. The session is suitable for NQTs, RQTs, English SLs and anyone committed to narrowing the gap in literacy.

How is the course structured?
During the session delegates will be involved in:

• Determining the beliefs and practices present in society, which are contributing positively and negatively towards boys’ engagement in reading and writing;
• Identifying where these beliefs can be addressed in the classroom and the wider school environment;
• Engaging with colleagues from other schools to identify a range of activities and approaches to develop boys’ engagement.

Who is the Trainer?
This session has been designed and is delivered by ex-Deputy Headteacher, Curriculum and English Subject Leader, Hazel Green. She has successfully worked on narrowing the gender gap in her own schools and as a Leading Literacy Teacher for Essex, has supported other schools in this process.

How will my School benefit?
During this session, delegates will consider how societal expectations and behaviours impact on boys’ interest and engagement in literacy. They will identify ways in which this is transferred into their school environment, in terms of social and emotional interactions and teaching and learning behaviours in their classrooms. This will lead to the development of new ideas and approaches to implement in the classroom, and in the wider school environment, to engage boys.

How will my students benefit?
This session has boys’ perspectives about reading and writing at its very heart. Practitioners will be actively engaged in identifying ways in which to make learning more relevant and accessible for boys within their school and classroom. With increased engagement in literacy, boys will make accelerated progress in both their reading and writing.
