Billericay Teaching Alliance is offering a Professional Clerks’ Development programme. The programme will be trainer led online (via Zoom).
Overview This programme offers both new and experienced clerks an opportunity to develop their role so that they can contribute effectively to governance at their school or academy trust. New clerks will develop their understanding of clerking and develop essential knowledge and skills, whilst experienced clerks will be able to enhance and develop their competencies and expertise. The programme has been recently updated to reflect the current national landscape and is applicable to clerks in all settings including MATs and LA schools. Delegates will have the chance to network and work with clerks across the country.
About the Programme The programme will consist of four face-to-face modules delivered by an experienced, high quality facilitator. Delegates will complete a 360° evaluation at the beginning of the programme to establish their competencies and areas to develop. Delegates will complete inter-session research and activities to put their learning into practice, will reflect on learning throughout the programme, and experience peer support and sharing of practice with other clerks. The following will be explored:
Understanding Governance and the role of the clerk
Administration, advice and guidance
People and relationships
Governance Panels (including permanent exclusions, grievance, disciplinary and appeals) and Evaluation of Programme, learning and impacts
All materials will be emailed to delegates ahead of each module. Delegates will have access to two online portals to download materials from and complete their 360° evaluation via (before and up to a year after the programme). They will also receive access to a Clerks forum.
NOTE: This programme is valued at £430 per delegate – we are pleased to be able to offer this programme at over 50% reduction!!!
Who is the trainer? This course will be delivered by Mark Coppel. Mark is an NGA consultant, and undertakes external reviews of governance for NGA Consultancy, delivers sessions for NGA Training and facilitates on the NGA Leading Governance development programmes for chairs, clerks and boards. Mark has been working in education since 2006 as a consultant and trainer, working with local authorities, multi academy trusts and teaching school alliances. Mark is a National Leader of Governance and his governance experience includes chairing interim executive boards – taking schools from special measures to good, being a member of a trust’s regional board, being the member of a number of transition boards, and chairing a special school’s governing board.
How will my Board benefit? The programme is framed around the Clerking Competency Framework, which was first published by the DfE in April 2017. This identifies the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide professional clerking to the governing boards of maintained schools, academies and multi-academy trusts. With guidance form a trained professional clerk the board can be more effective and focused, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for young people.

It has given me some things to think about, especially how what I've learned can benefit the governing bodies I support.”“Thank you for providing such a great training programme and additional support over and above what I had expected.”
